Student Loan Forgiveness: There’s a Way To Cancel Your Debt Within 2 Weeks

The White House continues to encourage qualified borrowers to submit debt relief claims even while legal objections to President Joe Biden’s proposal to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt are being heard in courts.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the temporary order does not restrict borrowers from requesting student debt relief via studentaid.gov following the recent court judgment to suspend one-time student loan debt relief.

Cancel Student Loan Automatically

While the majority of the 40 million borrowers who qualify for one-time student loan debt relief must submit an online application, some will be granted student loan debt discharges automatically. Around 8 million Americans might have their federal debt automatically forgiven as early as November 14.

The Education Department emailed those who might be eligible for automatic debt forgiveness on October 18. If you do not choose to opt-out, we will work with your servicer to complete any relief for which you are qualified after November 14 but if you would want us to begin processing your relief sooner, you can file an application immediately.

Borrowers must get in touch with their loan servicer by November 14 if they do not wish to be included in the student loan debt reduction program. According to the Biden administration, borrowers who already have their income information on file with the federal government will not need to submit an application for student loan debt forgiveness.

The Department of Education will cooperate with loan servicers to automatically cancel either $10,000 or $20,000 because it can confirm the income eligibility of those borrowers using the data it already has.

Most borrowers whose income information has been submitted to the department are enrolled in income-driven repayment plans. These programs enable people who have student loans to pay off their debt by making fixed monthly payments based on their income, typically over a 20- to 25-year period.
