Authorities in Oregon revealed soon before Thanksgiving that SNAP benefits recipients will get an additional payment in December.
The federal government has authorized monthly emergency assistance allocations since March 2020. SNAP benefits recipients received extra aid during the COVID-19 outbreak as a result.
SNAP Benefits Increase in Oregon
The availability of these SNAP benefits will last until at least January 2023. But after the national health emergency ended, it is expected to expire. About 426,000 SNAP households will get an additional $70 million in food assistance in December on top of their regular SNAP payments.
“We know that many rely on these additional emergency food benefits to purchase enough healthy food for themselves and their family,” said Jana McLellan, interim director of the Self-Sufficiency Programs at the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS).
The holiday season can increase stress and worry for many Oregonians who are still having trouble meeting their basic needs. In order to obtain help during this difficult time, we advise them to contact our colleagues at 211, the Oregon Food Bank, and their neighborhood Community Action Agency.
Current SNAP families will get emergency benefit allotments on December 13. Families that missed out on payments during the first monthly distribution will get them on December 30 or January 4, 2023.
The additional payments go to the 426,000 households in Oregon that receive SNAP benefits. Higher rewards are anticipated if the federal government declares that the COVID-19 public health emergency is over.
According to the agency, Oregonians who receive SNAP benefits are required to notify the Department of Human Services of any changes to their family structure or source of income if these changes may affect the number of benefits received. In Oregon, SNAP benefits average $200 per household per month.
