RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Gal Costa, a singer who was a leader in the Tropicalia and Brazilian popular music scenes and had a career that lasted nearly 60 years, died on Wednesday. She turned 77.

Costa was born Maria da Graca Penna Burgos in the northeastern state of Bahia. She and future legends like Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Maria Bethania were all on the scene at the same time.
