New “Stimulus” Check 2022: Massachusetts Tax Refund Money is on Its Way Right Now!

If you got a letter from the IRS, don’t throw it away. The tax agency says that 9 million people can still get thousands in stimulus and Child Tax Credit payments, but they only have a few days to do so.

The IRS said it started sending the letters around the middle of October to reach millions of people who haven’t claimed benefits like stimulus checks, the expanded Child Tax Credit, and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The IRS said that people who are eligible have until November 17 to claim the money.

During the pandemic, the government sent out a lot of money to help households stay afloat financially. The IRS used tax returns to figure out who was eligible and where to send the payments since tax returns include bank account information or home addresses for sending checks. But the IRS recently said that about 9 million Americans haven’t claimed their stimulus money yet because they didn’t file a 2021 tax return.

The letters will tell people who might be eligible for the money and how to get it, the agency said.

Who is the Mail Going to?

The IRS said that the Treasury’s Office of Tax Analysis found 9 million people who don’t have to file taxes because they make too little money. Most single taxpayers under the age of 65 don’t have to file a tax return if they make less than $12,550 a year. For single people over the age of 65, that number goes up to $14,250.

What Kinds of Credits Are There?

People who got the letters might be eligible for one or more of the following tax credits:

The Credit for Recovery in 2021
The tax credit for children
Earned Income Tax Credit

What is the Credit for Recovery in 2021?

That’s the official name of the third round of stimulus checks authorized by lawmakers during the pandemic, providing up to $1,400 per eligible person, including qualifying children, claimed on a tax return.

That means a family of four could qualify for up to $5,600 in stimulus money, assuming they earn under the income limit for the program. Under the law, single taxpayers who make less than $75,000 and married couples who make less than $150,000 can get the full amount.

People who make more than those amounts slowly stop getting payments.

What is the Tax Credit for Children?

The improved Child Tax Credit raised this benefit from $2,000 per child to as much as $3,600 per child in 2021. Before that, the benefit was only $2,000 per child. The purpose of the tax credit is to help parents pay for the costs of raising children.

For the last six months of 2021, the IRS sent checks to parents with eligible children. Each check was equal to half of the annual credit. The IRS said that families can claim the other half of the credit now, even if they will get monthly checks in the second half of 2021.

How Do I Get These Things?

People who think they are eligible for tax credits but haven’t filed a tax return are being told by the IRS to do so, even if they haven’t received a letter from the agency yet.

“The IRS wants to remind people that there is no penalty for claiming a tax refund on a tax return that is filed after April 2022,” the IRS said.

People can get the benefits in a few ways:

File a tax return with Free File before November 17, 2022. People who make less than $73,000 can use Free File.
Use GetCTC to file a simplified tax return for 2021 before November 15, 2022.
The IRS said that if people want their tax credits as soon as possible, they should file their tax forms electronically and choose direct deposit.

The Hat is the Tax Credit for Earned Income?

The Earned Income Tax Credit, which has been around for decades and is meant to help low-income workers, was also increased by the American Rescue Plan of 2021. Before the law, workers without children between the ages of 25 and 64 could only get up to $538. With the pandemic law, that amount went up to $1,502.

The law also raised the amount that working families with children can claim. Now, parents with three children can get as much as $6,728.

Massachusetts Tax Refund 2022

But it’s important to note that the 2022 tax refund program in Massachusetts is a little different from another state “stimulus” programs because each eligible Massachusetts taxpayer will get a different amount of money in their tax refund checks. This is because Massachusetts will send each eligible taxpayer a check or make a direct deposit for about 14% of their state income tax bill from their 2021 tax return.

So, why is Massachusetts giving almost $3 billion back to taxpayers who are eligible? Well, in 1986, the people of Massachusetts passed a law called Chapter 62F. That law says that Massachusetts has to give back any extra money to taxpayers.

The law was put into effect for the first time in a while because Massachusetts got $41,812,654,358 in state tax money during the 2022 fiscal year. (That was more than $2.9 billion more than what was allowed under Chapter 62F.)

When will Massachusetts start giving back tax money? About 500,000 tax refunds are due to be sent out by Massachusetts in the first week of November. After that, about a million tax refunds will be sent out each week until all of the eligible taxpayers have received their money back.

Do Wealthy Bay Staters Benefit More From the 62f Tax Refunds?

Some people have said that the Massachusetts 62F tax refunds are unfair because they help people with more money. Part of the reason for this is that the amounts of the refunds are based on a flat percentage.

A study by the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center says that the average Massachusetts taxpayer will probably get a tax refund of about $529. But data from 2018 shows that people with lower incomes could get tax refunds of less than $10, and data from 2020 shows that people with incomes over $1 million could get on average more than $28,000.

Overall, the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center found that almost 75% of the nearly $3 billion in tax refunds will go to people whose incomes are in the top 20% of Massachusetts.

Will the Government Send Out More Stimulus Checks in 2022?

It’s important to know that the 2022 Massachusetts tax refund and other 2022 state tax rebate checks and state stimulus payments are different from the three COVID-19 stimulus payments you may have received from the federal government in recent years.

The federal stimulus check program is over. But if you didn’t get your third COVID stimulus payment of $1,400 or your 2021 child tax credit, you still have time to file your 2021 federal income tax return and get those funds.
