The Peripheral, based on the novel by science fiction icon William Gibson, the visionary who coined the term “cyberspace,” debuted just as audiences were becoming far too comfortable with Westworld. Creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.
The new Prime Video series The Peripheral stars Chlo Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher, a teenage gamer who, in the not-too-distant future, is stuck in a dead-end job at a 3D printing business in rural America. Flynne’s brother Burton (Jack Reynor) asks her to take over his shift beta testing a video game.
Still, when she arrives at work, she discovers that she has actually been piloting a real drone in real-time in the real dystopian London of the 22nd century and that she has witnessed a murder in the process.
This causes severe problems for Flynne and her brother. Flynne, the only witness to a murder, must work with characters from the future to identify and apprehend the perpetrator before he or she can harm Flynne’s family. To accomplish this, Flynne will need to employ a peripheral that is neither a dongle, a mouse, or a printer but rather a “body-for-hire,” a “anthropomorphic drone… a telepresence avatar” that Flynne can command from afar using a headset.
Though we’ve all heard of MMORPGs, time travel, parallel universes, dystopias, and the use of drones and avatars, Gibson’s worlds never fail to delight. Assassins use squidsuits to hide their identities while killing people. Manipulating warriors with haptics. Tattoos are not fixed in place.
If not, the ordinarily passive robot Michikoids will suddenly develop spider eyes if they are ever threatened. There are a lot of great techs to check out and even more ways for Kick-Ass star Moretz to, well, kick-ass.

The Peripheral About
Living in the rural American South, Flynne Fisher (Chloe Grace Moretz) works at the local 3D printing shop and supplements her income by playing virtual reality games for the wealthy. The next thing she knows, she’s wearing a headset and transported to a futuristic version of London, a place far removed from her own hardscrabble reality.
Seventy years from now, in London, someone has figured out how to unlock a passageway to Flynne’s timeline. Seventy years from now, in London, someone has figured out how to unlock a passageway to Flynne’s timeline. London is a hazardous city despite its allure. But Flynne soon realizes this isn’t a game like any she’s played before; instead, it’s the real thing.
Flynn’s presence here triggers dangerous forces, forces that are fixated on destroying her and her family in their own world, as she seeks to learn who has connected both worlds and why. William Gibson’s The Peripheral is a brilliant, hallucinogenic look at the future of humanity and beyond.
