Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, is gone, just like the knives the movies are about.
At a press conference at the London Film Festival, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery director Rian Johnson solved at least one mystery: the detective Benoit Blanc, who likes to wear ascots, is gay.
When asked if a scene in which Blanc seems to have a live-in male lover shows that his character is gay, Johnson said, “Yes, he clearly is.”
EW also got confirmation from Netflix and Johnson reps that detective Benoit Blanc is gay.
This might not be a big surprise to people who strangely look at things. Blanc sounds like a mix of gay icons Truman Capote and Foghorn Leghorn in the first Knives Out, but that was just a hint. Glass Onion, on the other hand, is only using text, baby.
Johnson, for one, is very happy for Benoit and himself that Blanc’s lover will be played by a cameo actor. “I can’t think of anyone else who would make me happier than being with Benoit Blanc,” Johnson said.
Craig said, “I don’t want to give anything away, but who wouldn’t want to live with that person?”
Natasha Lyonne, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom, Jr., and Dave Bautista play different characters in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Hugh Grant, Yo-Yo Ma, the late Angela Lansbury, and Stephen Sondheim are also listed as playing themselves.
Ethan Hawke is also on the cast list, but his part isn’t credited. This could be neither here nor there. Or queer.
When Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery comes out in theatres on November 23 and on Netflix on December 23, people will be able to find out for sure.
