It has been confirmed that production on a brand-new Christmas-themed action comedy film has begun. The Norwegian movie Violent Night, directed by Tommy Wirkola, is going to be released in theatres around the time of the holidays.
The production of the film will be handled by 87North Productions, which was also responsible for the production of last year’s Nobody, which starred Bob Odenkirk, and distribution will be handled by Universal Pictures. In his home Norway, the director Wirkola is most recognized for combining elements of horror, humor, and action in his films.
His films include the spoof Kill Buljo, which is based on the movie Kill Bill, as well as the Dead Snow series, which pits students against reanimated Nazi zombies from World War II. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, which Wirkola directed in 2013 and is considered to be his debut film in the English language, is his most well-known work.
Now, it would appear that he is applying his characteristic gritty approach to one of the film’s most recognizable subgenres: the Christmas movie.
David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper in the Netflix series Stranger Things, is in talks to play the title role in the upcoming film Santa Claus: The Movie. According to rumors, Harbour’s interpretation of Santa Claus will be everything but cheery.

The plot will apparently revolve around a squad of mercenaries that sneak into a family’s home on Christmas Eve that is similar to the family in Succession and take them hostage, which immediately brings to mind a somewhat more sinister version of Home Alone.
The mercenaries, on the other hand, are unaware that Santa Claus himself is present and ready to fight back, eager to demonstrate that this Saint Nicholas is everything but a saint.

At CinemaCon in April 2022, further material was shown to the public for the first time. Harbour referred to his character as “f***ing Santa Claus” who wields a “motherf***ing hammer,” stating that he is required to use curse words due to the absurdity of the plot.
After the intruders have broken into the residence, a little girl there makes a desperate phone call to Santa for assistance, and Santa gives her the cryptic response, “Santa Claus is coming to town.”
The film shows Kris Kringle engaging in gruesome and excessively violent behavior, while his elves help him out by practicing various forms of martial arts. He murders one of the thieves by hitting him over the head with a sock that contains pool balls, and he kills another by stabbing him in the eyes with an electric Christmas star. The jovial and renowned remark “I’m merry old St. Nick” comes at the end of Santa’s violent rampage as a fitting conclusion.
Fans of movies that combine elements from John Wick with Die Hard and Succession with Jim Hopper in the role of Santa Claus may want to keep this one in the back of their minds.
Within the next several weeks and months, most likely more plot-related material will become available. To tell you the truth, I can’t think of anything that might make this concept any crazier. It’s a Christmas thriller with a coal-dark tone that suggests you should always bet on red.
