Eibhlin shows Cáit affection and teaches her jobs around the house and farm. She shows Cáit a well on the property, stating the water has healing qualities but warns them to be careful while taking water from it.
Cáit came without luggage, so Eibhln put her in a spare bedroom and dressed her in guys’ clothing. Later, she buys Cáit clothing.
Seán is reserved and cold to his foster daughter at first. When Eibhln is away, Cáit helps Seán clean the stables. As he works, Cáit goes off. Once Seán realizes her disappearance, he investigates the premises. After discovering her, he scolds her and tells her to never leave. Cáit dashes home after a violent rage.
Seán is sorry and tries to connect with Cáit. Slowly, the girl opens up to her foster father, and they bond.
Family Cinnsealach attends a wake. Seeing Cáit become restless at the celebration as Eibhln and Seán socialize, a gossipy neighbor offers to watch her for a few hours.
Eibhlin agrees but hesitates. While walking together, the lady tells Cáit that the Cinnsealachs’ son drowned in the family slurry hole years before Cáit’s arrival. When the Cinnsealachs pick up Cáit from the neighbor’s house, they observe her distant demeanor and enquire what he said to her. Cáit tells them the truth, which shocks the couple, but they don’t dispute it.
Over a month into Cáit’s stay, her mother gives birth and asks the Cinnsealachs to return her in time for school. Cáit, Eibhln, and Seán are heartbroken to separate, but they agree to transport Cáit to her birth family. Cáit sneaks to the well to get water to avoid her cruel parents, but her fast-filling bucket drags her in. Eibhln, seeking for Cáit, finds her wet and upset returning from the well.
Next day, Eibhln and Seán drive Cáit home. Cáit’s mother scarcely notices her homecoming, and her father scolds her for sneezing. After a tense talk, during which Eibhln tells Cáit’s parents she’s welcome to remain with them anytime, the adults regretfully bid farewell to Cáit and leave. While watching the automobile leave the driveway,

Cáit races after it as Seán locks the gate to her family’s property. The Foster father and daughter hug while Eibhln tears in the vehicle.
