Emily Deschanel’s most recent major role was in the Fox television series Bones, which aired a few years ago. It has been a while since we’ve seen her in a leading role. And now, Deschanel is making her comeback in the brand-new Netflix suspense series Devil in Ohio.
The limited series is based on true events, which are detailed in the author Daria Polatin’s book of the same name. Polatin is also the showrunner and the lead writer for the show. Polatin is both a writer and a producer, and he is best known for having worked on such well-known productions in the past as Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Castle Rock, Condor, and others.
Additionally, she serves as an executive producer for the Netflix original series, along with Rachel Miller and Andrew Wilder. Additionally, Jadene Stojak Babcock and Ian Hay serve as producers for the show.
The story of Devil in Ohio centres on Dr. Suzanne Mathis, a psychiatrist who offers sanctuary to Mae, an individual who has escaped from an unknown satanic cult. Dr. Mathis’s life is turned upside down, and she and her family’s lives are put in jeopardy as a result of her efforts to save the unfortunate girl.
Alongside other original thriller titles from the streaming service, such as The Imperfects, Narco-Saints, and Santo, amongst others, this psychological and satanic thriller will be released during the same month as those other titles.

Devil in Ohio Release Date

Devil in Ohio Cast
Emily Deschanel is the most intriguing member of this ensemble cast. Since the conclusion of Bones, it has been some time since we’ve seen her in a leading role on a television show.
She did have a great story arc on Animal Kingdom, but I’m more excited to watch her play the lead role in the upcoming Netflix original series Devil in Ohio.
In addition to Deschanel, the cast also features Madeleine Arthur, who appeared in All the Boys, Sam Jaeger, who currently stars on Parenthood, and Xaria Dotson, who you may recognize from the series The Birch that airs on Facebook Watch.
- Suzanne Mathis is portrayed here by Emily Deschanel.
- Mae and Jules are portrayed by Madeleine Arthur and Xaria Dotson, respectively.

Devil in Ohio Plot
When a young girl is discovered by the side of the road and taken to a nearby hospital, no one has any idea who she is or where she came from.
While they wait for the state to find a suitable foster home for the young girl, a psychiatrist working at the hospital named Dr. Suzanne Mathis takes the girl into her own home.
They start referring to her as Mae, but it is not clear whether that is a name that was given to her by the medical staff or by Dr. Mathis’ family, or whether it is the name that the girl shares with them all.

It becomes immediately apparent that there is something far more sinister at work here than just a girl fleeing from a cornfield as the trailer plays.
The symbols that have been drawn on the stakes in the field are unlike anything the audience may have seen before, but they shed light on the nature of the predicament from which Mae escaped. Before Dr. Mathis says, “It’s a cult,” into her phone, there are references to satanic worship as well as other cultic practices.
Mae is marked in a way that gives the impression that she is significant to the cult, and this appears to have led someone else to the conclusion that she was let go on purpose. Given that information, what possible good could come from letting her go free? Did she forget to tell anyone else to come back with her?
On the other hand, strange occurrences start to take place in the house involving Mae. There is a sudden appearance of a strange doll on Dr. Mathis’ nightstand in the middle of the night, Mae is seen walking around with a knife, and Dr. Mathis’ husband mentions that he thinks Mae is responsible for something happening, but the audience is not given any information about what that something might be.
Considering that the movie was adapted from a book, reading the book’s synopsis is beneficial. The relationship between Dr. Mathis and her eldest daughter Jules, who has returned home in search of Mae, is at the heart of this book.
This stranger starts to try to take over Jules’ life by dressing in her clothes, flirting with her crush, and even sleeping in her bedroom. He does all of these things in an attempt to take control of her life. The moment when Jules discovers a pentagram carved into Mae’s back is the defining moment of the story.
The realization that she is associated with a cult is brought about as a result of this. In spite of the fact that the television trailer places a greater emphasis on Jules’ mother, we can only hope that these storylines will be carried over from the book.
Devil in Ohio Trailer
The teaser for Devil in Ohio, which was released in August of 2022, does an excellent job of hinting at the sinister and mysterious atmosphere of the series. In it, we see how Suzanne first comes into contact with Mae and how she eventually invites her into her home.

The video clip also gives viewers a glimpse of the evil cult from which Mae managed to flee, and it gives the impression that the girl may have been intended to be a sacrifice of some kind.
The promotional material also provides a sneak peek at the investigation into the cult and reveals that Suzanne has a lot of trouble ahead of her.
And perhaps the most dangerous of all is Mae herself, who appears to be developing a fixation on Suzanne and a hatred for the rest of her family. This could make Mae the greatest danger of all.
Where Does the Idea for Devil in Ohio Come From?
The cult depicted in the series is entirely made up; however, it is based on the best-selling book of the same name written by Daria Polatin in 2017 and published under the same name.
