Willow Smith discussed her decision to shave her head when she was only 11 years old in a recent interview with Glamour UK.
“I prefer it when the light reflects off my scalp and creates glare.
I consider shaving my head to be one of the most extreme steps I’ve taken in the pursuit of a more attractive appearance.”
Willow came forth after the success of her track “Whip My Hair” to admit that she had been underappreciated and had shaved her head as a show of defiance against her overworked condition.
She explained that “as a Black woman, there were a lot of layers to my relationship with my hair and complexion while I was growing up; it was definitely a learning curve.”
“It was necessary for me to model myself after other stunning black women.
Just taking a look at someone who, like me, is living their truth and refusing to allow what society says bring them down inspires me.
I believe that was the single most significant [factor] in shaping who I became as a child.”
During her pop-punk performance of “Whip My Hair” at her Facebook Live event, Willow in Concert: Lately I Feel Everything, in July of 2018, she shaved her head again onstage while the audience watched.
In her words: “It’s a good thing that, these days, I give things a little bit more of my attention before I act on them.
I have the impression that I am constantly developing and searching for the most genuine version of myself.
In my opinion, that is something that lasts a lifetime.”
She went on to say that “as a Black woman, there were a lot of layers to my relationship with my hair and complexion while I was growing up; it was definitely a learning curve.”
She was referring to the fact that she had darker skin and hair.

“No matter how I might be feeling, I enjoy engaging in that activity. I try not to dwell on it too much since it’s not something I enjoy doing.
I adore having complete control over it. I believe that simply being myself may be revolutionary at times.”
