Finding the small Easter eggs or behind-the-scenes trivia that you don’t get from simply watching the movie must be one of the highlights of the job for talk show hosts who get to interview celebs on a daily basis about their newest ventures. When Kelly Clarkson interviewed Nicolas Cage about his most recent film The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent on her talk program, she was truly living the life of a movie lover. The host’s reaction when she learned that the renowned actor had added a particular sequence to the film was absolutely precious.
Minor spoilers will be revealed in the following sentences about the scenario in question, in which Nicolas Cage played himself and made out with a younger version of himself (Nicky Cage, naturally). When the actor remarked that the moment in question wasn’t in the script, the presenter of The Kelly Clarkson Show stopped laughing and said how narcissistic the sequence was. Kelly Clarkson was so shocked by the news that she threw herself back in her chair and lavished him with compliments. See the following discussion regarding how Nic Cage came up with one of the film’s funniest scenes (as well as her response to the information):
As fascinating as Nicolas Cage’s reveal itself was Kelly Clarkson’s response. It can be extremely irritating when a talk show host completely cuts off an interview with a star. (Jimmy Fallon interrupting has its own complete video.) It’s clear that Cage had no problem with Clarkson’s exuberance, though, as she simply could not contain herself from shouting, “I adore you! I adore you!” before telling the audience as a whole what transpired when the older Cage met the younger Cage.
The actor claimed that Nicky Cage was “so conceited, so irreverent, so obnoxious,” and when he met face-to-face (so to speak) with this “terrible” version of himself, he came up with the concept that was incorporated to the script. He stated to Clarkson:
But instead, I answered, “OK, well, for me, this whole experience is bizarre, unpleasant, and embarrassing, kind of like if I were making out with myself.” Yes, Nicky should French kiss Nick, I reasoned. And that is where that originated.
It appears that the decision was sound, but the former Voice coach didn’t simply praise the make-out scene. She burst into laughter several times during the film and gave Pedro Pascal and Tiffany Haddish, as well as the rest of the cast of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, high praise.
