Commentary: Witness by Witness, the Truth of the January 6th Capitol Attack Revealed

The James Webb Telescope is incredible. NASA pointed it into space and discovered stars and galaxies we never knew existed.

I wish everyone in America could see more clearly around Jan. 6, 2021.

It doesn’t require a telescope.

Simply keep an eye on the Select Committee hearings on January 6.

Consider the statement of Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi), the chair of the Jan. 6 Select Committee.

He understands how crucial it is, particularly for the African American community.

“I am from a part of the country where, if it hadn’t been for the federal government and the Constitution, my parents and many other Americans like them would have continued to be treated as second-class citizens,” Thompson said.

“The freedom to vote without fear of harassment, travel in relative safety, and dine and seat wherever you want is because we have a government that cares about the well-being of its citizens.”

And that, according to Thompson, did not occur on Trump’s watch on January 6, 2022.

“It was an attack on our country,” Thompson said. “An attack on our democracy, on our Constitution.” A sitting president with a violent mob attempting to prevent the peaceful transfer of power from one president to another. It still makes my blood boil to think about it.”

Yours should be boiling as well. If you were unsure whether January 6 was a planned coup, just watch the July 12 hearing.

There is more corroborating testimony from people in Trump’s inner circle, such as White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, who knew what happened from December 2020 to January 6.

The story is not good for our democracy. Trump was well aware that he had lost the election, but he continued to look for ways to maintain power.

At a meeting on December 18, 2020, Trump personal advisors Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, and Michael Flynn (dubbed the “crazy ones”) suggested everything from foreign election interference to voting machine fraud to a massive rally with the most ardent Trump supporters.

Cipollone proposed accepting defeat. The debate was heated, but the typical Trump supporters were defeated.

Then Trump tweeted, “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th.” Be there. It’ll be wild.”

Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-FL) described it as a “siren call.” The Asian American member of Congress stated that she was the only member of the committee “who was not blessed to be born American.”

She was born in Vietnam, where her family fled a communist government and was rescued by the US Navy and given refuge in America.

She recalled how, decades later, she was serving as a congresswoman and was under attack on January 6.

Another instance of context from an Asian American perspective reminded us that every American is a stakeholder in these hearings.

Murphy also read text messages written by Trump’s former campaign manager Brad Parscale on January 6.

“This is about Trump pushing for uncertainty in our country, a sitting president asking for a civil war,” Parscale texted Katrina Pierson. “I feel bad for assisting him in his victory.”

When Pierson tried to absolve him of responsibility, Parscale texted back, “Yeah, but a woman is dead, and yeah, if I were Trump and I knew my rhetoric killed someone…”

When Pierson pushed back again, Parscale insisted that it was the rhetoric that killed.

People of colour have witnessed the acts of a killing mob, and this hearing featured the testimony of repentant rioters.

Former propagandist for the nationalist group “The Oathkeepers,” Jason Van Tatenhove, warned that the country is “extremely fortunate that more bloodshed did not occur because the potential was there from the start.” And things could get worse if Trump wins again.

Stephen Ayres, a Jan. 6 rioter who went to D.C. because he felt called by Trump, testified that he feels lied to. He stated that January 6 changed his life for the worse.

He lost his job and nearly his home. He warned Americans who still believe the “Big Lie” to “take the (horse) blinders off.”

It doesn’t take a telescope to see how close a failed coup came to threatening our democracy on January 6.
