A Baton Rouge man received his prison sentence on Tuesday, July 12.
Wayne Triche, 72, entered a guilty plea and was given a sentence of 41 months in prison.
Triche admitted to committing tax and wire fraud.
Triche “was responsible for managing a portion of the New Orleans Firefighters Pension and Relief Fund’s (“NOFPRF”) investments,” according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Evidently, Triche did not conduct the account’s management legally.
According to the DOJ, “TRICHE embezzled about $937,658.77 and spent those monies for personal costs such as a civil court judgement, credit card charges, and gambling” without then remitting the earnings gained to the NOPRF.
Triche will be required to return that sum of money as part of his punishment to the New Orleans Firefighters Pension and Relief Fund.
As a result of Mr Wayne Triche’s sophisticated scheme, the New Orleans Firefighters Pension and Relief Fund as well as the members of the fund suffered significant harm. Mr Triche’s scheme was carried out while he was under the influence of his rapacious avarice and callous contempt for those losses.
You can count on the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation and the rest of our federal partners to hold those who behave in a comparable manner fully accountable.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “TRICHE’s failure to claim the embezzled funds on his personal income tax returns resulted in tax due and owing to the Internal Revenue Service for $329,895.00,” which is why tax fraud charges have been brought against him.
Triche will also be required to reimburse the IRS for that money.
According to FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Douglas A. Williams, Jr., “Today’s punishment illustrates that those like Mr Wayne Triche who commit financial crimes to profit themselves will be held accountable.”
“We applaud our partners at the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation and the United States Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Louisiana for helping to disrupt fraud and bring justice to the victims,” they said.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation received assistance from the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in conducting this investigation.
Significant damage was inflicted not only on the New Orleans Firefighters Pension and Relief Fund but also on the individuals who are a part of that fund as a result of the intricate scheme that Mr Wayne Triche devised.
