US Investigations Into Trump Detractors Are Uncommon but Thorough

The US is looking into how two ex-FBI directors, both of whom were Donald Trump’s detractors, were the targets of intense, infrequent tax audits while he was president.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requested that the Department of the Treasury investigate the cases of James Comey and Andrew McCabe.

The New York Times was the first publication to reveal that both men had been chosen for an unusual audit.

It is intended that the audit’s participants be chosen at random.

The Times estimated that in 2017, there was a one in 30,000 chance that someone would be chosen for the IRS’s National Research Program.

Trump hasn’t offered any commentary on the subject.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration will be looking into the situation, according to a statement from the IRS.

Additionally, the IRS stated that this came after “a press inquiry.”

Mr Comey was informed that a “random” audit was being conducted on his 2017 tax return, according to IRS letters obtained by the New York Times. The same information about Mr McCabe’s 2019 return was provided.

According to Mr McCabe’s comments to CNN on Thursday, sending the issue to the Inspector General is the appropriate course of action.

However, it will be interesting to watch if the IG actually takes action and releases its findings.

Though Mr Comey has not yet issued a statement to the public, he did tell the Times: “Maybe it’s just a coincidence, or maybe someone abused the IRS to target a political rival.

We ought to be aware of the response given the part Trump wants to keep playing in our nation.”
