New Subsidy Program by BWP to Assist Residents With Electric Bills

For a new assistance program, Burbank Water and Power will be taking applications.

For Burbank residents who meet the required income requirements, the Burbank Utility Service Subsidy (BUSS) program offers a continuous monthly 12 per cent discount on electric service.

The majority of participants will reduce their annual electric expenditure by $80-160.

The BUSS program aims to assist locals in covering the costs of the recent increases in electric and water rates that the Burbank City Council approved on May 24, 2022, as a result of rising energy prices.

It also aims to assist Burbank in achieving its sustainability goals and addressing the city’s ageing infrastructure needs.

Prices for water and energy will increase by 9% and 6%, respectively, starting on July 1, 2022.

Asst. General Manager of Marketing, Sustainability, and Strategy at BWP Jeannine Edwards stated, “The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on many people in Burbank, and we appreciate that many households are still working to recover.”

“When you factor in inflation and the impending rate increases, we wanted to offer some aid to support our residents who might be having a hard time making ends meet.”

If a resident meets the income requirements for the Burbank PASS Program and is the account holder or co-applicant on the BWP account, they may apply for the BUSS program.

The most recent tax return, a tax return transcript, or an IRS wage and income transcript must be included with the application as evidence of household income.

By contacting (800) 908-9946 or completing an online request at IRS, residents can request these documents from the IRS.

The BUSS program is not open to residents who pay the Lifeline rate for BWP.

A resident may apply for the BUSS programme if they are the account holder or co-applicant on the BWP account and meet the income requirements for the Burbank PASS Program.

The application must be accompanied by proof of household income in the form of the most recent tax return, a transcript of that return, or an IRS wage and income transcript.

Residents can seek these documents from the IRS by calling (800) 908-9946 or submitting an online form at IRS.
