In Every State, the County With the Highest Food Stamp Usage

To offset the devasting impact that inflation has had on state residents, California announced in June that it will issue $1,050 checks to around 23 million of its citizens.

The so-called inflation relief checks would probably not be sufficient on their own for low-income families, even if other U.S. states were to copy their example and issue their own.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the government’s program for providing food assistance, is one long-running initiative on which millions of Americans rely.

Approximately 13.8 million American families received SNAP payments, commonly known as food stamps, as of 2020.

24/7 Wall St. used five-year estimates of the proportion of households that got SNAP benefits in the 12 months before the poll from the 2020 American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau to identify the county with the highest SNAP recipiency rate in each state.

11.4 per cent of households in the US were receiving SNAP benefits as of 2020. Except for Wyoming, every state had a county or county-equivalent where a greater proportion of households received nutrition aid.

The percentage ranges from 9.2 per cent to 55.0 per cent among the counties or county-equivalents in each state with the highest SNAP recipient rate.

Income is the main determinant of SNAP eligibility, while other elements including assets and household composition also have an impact.

In each state, the counties with the highest SNAP participation rates also have poverty rates that are in the top three in that state. Roughly two-thirds of these counties fall into this category.

The highest and third-highest shares, respectively, of SNAP recipients in the nation, are found in Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota, where the poverty rate is 44.8 per cent and the SNAP recipient rate is 55.0 per cent. The majority of children living in poverty are found in these states.

Since income is the primary determinant of SNAP eligibility, unemployment is strongly correlated with the number of people getting benefits since unemployed workers are more likely to have little to no income.

Just over half of the counties with the highest SNAP recipient rates are also those with the highest or second-highest five-year jobless rates in their respective states.
