The Internal Revenue Service said in a press release that more forms can now be changed electronically.
Corrections to Forms 1040-NR, U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return, 1040-SS, U.S. Self-Employment Tax Return (Including the Additional Child Tax Credit for Bona Fide Residents of Puerto Rico), and 1040-PR, Self-Employment Tax Return-Puerto Rico, can be filed online.
According to IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig, “This project has come a long way from 2020 when we first released the option to file amended forms, which was an important milestone to benefit taxpayers and the tax community.”
“This new function will benefit those who need to make corrections even more. Additionally, this development will help the IRS with its inventory work on the backlog of current amended returns. We’re utilising this as yet another tool to assist us to get back on track.
A taxpayer can also electronically edit their return if they want to change their filing status or include a dependent who was already included on another return.
Annually, around 3 million Forms 1040-X are submitted by taxpayers. Taxpayers can still check the status of their electronically submitted Form 1040-X by using the web tool “Where’s My Amended Return?”

For Forms 1040/1040-SR, 1040-NR, and 1040-SS/1040-PR, a new electronic checkbox has been introduced to indicate that a superseding return is being filed electronically. A return that has been filed after the one that was initially filed but before the due date, including extensions, is referred to as a superseded return.
