Republicans are accusing GOP senators who support bipartisan gun legislation of betraying their party and aiding Democrats in their efforts to “confiscate” firearms.
On Tuesday, 14 Republicans voted in favour of a bipartisan gun bill that helped it pass the Senate’s first procedural hurdle.
Republicans then took to social media to criticise their fellow party members. Following last month’s tragic mass shootings at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, calls for stricter gun control have recently gotten stronger.
Republicans have consistently rejected Democratic proposals for decades, but the bipartisan senators’ bill significantly weakens them.
Nevertheless, some GOP members of Congress and other conservatives immediately criticised the Senate Republicans who supported the bill.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene charged that the GOP senators had “helped Democrats confiscate your weapons.”
A video of her saying during a news conference that all 14 senators will be removed from office was also included in the tweet.
In the tape, Greene is heard saying, “[President] Joe Biden… he’s pals with these Republican senators.” “People are enraged with them across the nation. These are the Republican senators who are no longer supported by Republican voters.”
Republican Representative Louie Gohmert of Texas claimed that the Republicans who supported the bill were guilty of “betrayal” while equating them to American Revolutionary War defector Benedict Arnold during an appearance on the conservative One America News Networks In Focus With Addison Smith.
Let me tell you, Benedict Arnold had to relocate to England the last time there was a betrayal like this one regarding a gun law, said Gohmert.
He had more friends there than he did in the United States “because he just didn’t.”
Republicans Bipartisan Gun Bill GOP Senator’s Betrayal
Conservative Republicans like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Louie Gohmert, and Matt Gaetz have criticised 14 GOP senators for supporting a bipartisan gun package.
On December 7, 2021, Greene, Gohmert, and Gaetz are shown together during a press conference at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Before the vote on Tuesday night, Fox News personality Tucker Carlson criticised Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn, who supported the measure, for having “gone far left in recent years.”
Has there ever been a larger, more blatant sell-out of any set of voters than what Republican Senators John Cornyn, Mitch McConnell, and the rest are doing at this moment? Carlson remarked. “Talk about a democracy being subverted.”
He continued, “If they keep doing this, the system will implode. “You are there to represent the interests of your voters,” someone said.
Shannon Bream, a Fox News anchor, remarked that the conservative news network’s own polling suggested that a sizable majority of Americans are in favour of tightening gun rules during a Sunday conversation with GOP Senator Mike Lee of Utah, who voted against the bill.
According to Fox News polling, many people currently support some of these recommendations, according to Bream. “There is a lot of support for doing this, at least in the public sphere.”
Trump criticises McConnell for advancing gun control laws that he had previously backed
What’s included in the bicameral gun bill?
Senator Kevin Cramer’s yardwork injury may require an amputation.
The bicameral plan contains funds for mental health programmes, closing the infamous “boyfriend loophole,” and stronger background checks for gun sales between the ages of 18 and 21, as well as cash for crisis intervention programmes that may support state “red flag” gun regulations.
