An Open Letter to Our President Titled “None of the Above”

Everyone would support you in a perfect world. Since you are the nation’s leader, your success is ultimately our prosperity.

That’s undoubtedly how the late George H.W. Bush (41, not 43) felt when he wrote a note of encouragement for Bill Clinton, the candidate who won the election in his place.

That world is not the one we inhabit. Many Americans who want to have power, influence, and opportunities are actively working against you.

In light of that, I’m sure it’s difficult to anticipate any story or storyline. Right, you have no control over petrol prices.

You have no control over the weather, the state of the international economy, the conflict in Ukraine, or any other factor that is causing unrest around the globe.

However, the nature of your work necessitates a certain amount of leadership, message, and communication.

Republicans won’t let you, inflation is reducing everyone’s wages, and Covid continues to make people sick, so you might not feel like there’s much you can do about the myriad of issues you face.

The point is, though, that you have to start ahead of things. You must speak up and explain how things will improve. Everyone hopes for happier days, so we want to trust you.

It all begins with you. Ronald Reagan gave the nation the kind of assurance you haven’t given during a time of intense tension with the Soviet Union. Reagan said that despite the array of nuclear missiles aimed at us, we were safe and should get some rest.

See, I understand. Every word you say that might be a little difficult to follow gets jumped on by people. You’ve made a lot of mistakes in a speech in the past.

But you can’t let your apprehension of saying the wrong thing prevent you from speaking up. Americans occasionally see you, but you rarely tell us anything noteworthy or give us a manageable serving of hope.

Politics

Your entire administration appears to be following your example. Nobody in your cabinet has given us any indication that things will improve anytime soon or, for lack of a better expression, that “you got this.”

The world’s biggest bully pulpit is yours. Your every move is covered by the media. Take advantage of that. Embrace the story. Give us a message of hope or a Project Hope. Honor Americans who have done right by their nation.

The daily dose of rage that Americans receive from the talking heads on both sides is considerable.

It has evolved into a mechanism for them to release their frustration and a strategy for keeping Americans glued to their televisions in anticipation of the newest scandal and chance to be repulsed by the other viewpoint.

You promised us when you ran for office that things would get back to normal and that you’d restore some semblance of decorum and decency to the oval office. Now that time is running out, both of our parties’ ire machines are in high gear.

Be the kind of leader that the circumstances require. Give us a regular update or a rough notion of what you know will work—you don’t have to find every solution at once.

We want you to demonstrate to us that you have opinions we can respect and that you have a strategy you’re implementing.

I am aware that you intend to run for office in 2024. Why? How would that benefit the nation?

We are aware that if Republicans win the majority in the forthcoming midterm elections as predicted, they may initiate several investigations into you and your son out of anger over the two impeachments of your predecessor.

Being furious and offended once that process has begun will just fuel your own rage. Right now, we both need your positive and capable leadership. Discuss your plan for a better today and tomorrow with Americans.

We depend on your success. We need tangible victories, even when what you’ve already accomplished may be underappreciated and unreported. Break the cycle and give us good reasons to trust you and your future.
