Rep. Maxine Waters of California is the latest lawmaker to test positive for coronavirus only days after the Summit of the Americas.
Waters, 83, revealed in a statement that she tested positive for COVID-19 for the second time, a day after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he had tested positive for the virus.
“I was alerted that I tested positive for COVID yesterday, following learning of a potential exposure at the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles,” Waters wrote, adding that she’s “currently isolated” and hasn’t noticed any symptoms.
“All protocols as indicated by the Office of the Attending Physician and CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] recommendations are being followed,” she added. “I’m thankful to have had all of my vaccinations and two booster doses. I strongly recommend that you get the vaccine and/or booster if you haven’t already. I’m OK and at home resting.”
Trudeau, 50, was also at the Summit of the Americas on Thursday, when he met with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, who hosted the event.
Despite the fact that Trudeau and Biden, 79, sat for their meeting without wearing masks, a White House official assured CNN and NBC News that the president was not in “close contact” with Trudeau.
At the Summit, Trudeau held a news conference with California Governor Gavin Newsom. On May 28, just weeks before the meeting, Newsom, 54, tested positive for COVID-19.
After attending the summit, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra tested positive for COVID-19, less than a month after contracting the virus.
“After taking a COVID-19 antigen test this morning in Sacramento, US Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra tested positive. He is fully vaccinated and COVID-19-boosted, and his symptoms are mild. He will continue to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, working alone “According to a release from the department.
