Food Stamps Can Be Used to Buy Some Surprising Things

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, is America’s most important anti-hunger initiative. According to the USDA, SNAP provided food security to approximately 41.5 million people in 2021, with an average payout of $218.14 per person.

EBT cards are used by recipients to receive payments and make purchases, and they can buy a lot more than just food with them. Here are some examples.

You can buy energy drinks with SNAP cash, but only if they meet the USDA’s stringent requirements. According to New York SNAP EBT, if the energy drink has a “nutritional facts” label, it qualifies.

If it says “supplemental facts,” it’s a supplement and can’t be bought with EBT. Red Bull, Rockstar, and Starbucks Double Shot make the cut, while 5 Hour Energy, Bang Shot, and Tweaker don’t.

What Do You Think Your Tax Refund Will Be?

SNAP can be used to buy packaged coffee, including Keurig-style K-cups, as well as creamer. Coffee that is ready to drink, on the other hand, is not available for purchase.

If you imagine you’ll make your own coffee at home and switch to tea when you’re out, you’ll be disappointed. Tea is also limited to packaged and unbrewed varieties due to the USDA’s prohibition on using SNAP funds to purchase any hot beverages.

Even if you live in the country and kill your own food, you won’t be able to use your EBT card to buy a new fibreglass rod at Bass Pro Shops — because hunting and fishing equipment is SNAP-eligible for a relatively small percentage of the population.

According to the USDA, due to the tremendous difficulties of buying food in supermarkets, some residents in Alaska’s most remote areas rely nearly entirely on hunting and fishing to feed their families.
