Families in NYC Public Schools Will Receive $375 in P-EBT Benefits This Summer

The Coronavirus Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (or P-EBT for short) is still being distributed by New York State’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) to all households with children who are qualified for free school lunch under the National School Lunch Act.

All public school kids in New York City are eligible for the benefit because it is a universal free lunch district. The benefits were started earlier this month by the state.

Due to the pandemic, the P-EBT programme was formed to assist families in paying for meals while schools were closed.

P-EBT food benefits are not available to families, and they cannot apply. Children who are entitled to $375 in benefits will receive them automatically.

When food benefits are distributed, recipients’ homes should be notified through text message. To see if their summer benefit was deposited, families should go to connectebt.com.

SNAP

Even though P-EBT food rewards are not SNAP benefits, they can only be used to buy the same foods that SNAP covers. The benefits, according to the USDA, can be used to purchase food for the entire family, including:

Fruits and vegetables • Meat, poultry, and fish • Dairy products • Bread and cereals • Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages

Families are not permitted to use the benefits to purchase commodities such as beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, vitamins, pharmaceuticals, hot foods at the point of sale, or non-food items such as pet food, cleaning supplies, paper products, hygiene items, or cosmetics.

It is not necessary to take advantage of the benefits straight soon. They’ll be valid for at least 274 days after they’ve been issued.
