The United States Is Attempting to Recover Russian Businessman Boris Abramovich’s Planes, Which Have Been Seized by the US

According to a Department of Justice official, US authorities have obtained warrants to seize two U.S.-origin planes owned by Russian businessman Roman Abramovich for flying into Russia without a licence required due to US sanctions imposed on Moscow in response to its invasion of Ukraine.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has also filed administrative charges against Abramovich, who is said in February named his Russian children as the beneficiaries of the “shell entities” that owned the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Gulfstream G650 ER aircraft, but that he continued to control them.

The charges come as the United States tries to put pressure on Russian business leaders who are close to Vladimir Putin to stop the “special military operation” in Ukraine. Neither the United States nor Abramovich has imposed any sanctions on him.

There were two flights from Istanbul to Moscow in March after the Commerce Department’s export restrictions went into effect on February 24: a Gulfstream and a Boeing, both flying from Dubai to Moscow. Abramovich would have needed a licence to fly the planes to Russia because they were made in the United States.

Authorities in Manhattan claim that no licences were applied for or issued for the planes to fly to Russia, as stated in a warrant obtained by the New York Times. This is part of a broader set of controls implemented by the United States since its invasion.

Administration sanctions against Abramovich include a fine of up to $328,121 and the denial of further export privileges, according to the Commerce Department’s request.

Vladimir Putin’s alleged friend, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, has been slapped with sanctions by the European Union and Britain, and he sold his stake in the Chelsea soccer team last month.
