A former Georgia court clerk who stole fines and fees was sentenced to over 12 years in prison Thursday.
Willie Demps, 64, from Phenix City, Alabama, was sentenced in Columbus. Demps pled guilty to bank fraud and tax evasion this year.

Federal prosecutors said Demps bilked Muscogee County for millions when he was a deputy court clerk. Demps collected fines, fees, and other payments, often in cash kept in an office safe. Investigators found the office made $5.5 million from 2010 to 2019, but only deposited $210.
Prosecutors say Demps wrote 330 checks from the clerk’s office totalling $1.3 million to several accomplices, who cashed them and gave Demps a cut.
