Finally, a Twitter story about Elon Musk that doesn’t involve his perhaps owning a website.
The Tesla CEO headed to Twitter (where he has a lot of awful posts) to confirm a story that he had passed down a chance to work with Bill Gates because of some good old-fashioned rich guy bickering.
It all started when an account named Whole Mars Catalog shared multiple screenshots purporting to depict a text interaction between Musk and Gates earlier that evening.
So apparently Bill Gates hit up @elonmusk to discuss “philanthropy on climate change” but Elon asked if he still had a half billion dollar short position on $TSLA.

Musk asks Gates if he had a $500 million short stock position against Tesla throughout the call.
That means that, rather than the typical investing technique of putting money into a company and hoping it succeeds, Gates would benefit financially if Tesla’s value fell.
Gates confirms that he does, suggests that the two collaborate on philanthropy, and is swiftly shut down by Musk for, oh, wishing Tesla fails.
Yeah, but I didn’t leak it to NYT. They must have got it through friends of friends.
I heard from multiple people at TED that Gates still had half billion short against Tesla, which is why I asked him, so it’s not exactly top secret.

Although the truth of the texts had not been proven in the original post, Musk did what Musk does and jumped in himself. He said that it was genuine, but that he had not leaked it.
What exactly does this imply for you and me? Really, not much. It’s mostly just Musk getting a little messy over an alleged chat he had with another man who is tremendously wealthy.

This, I suppose, is the subject of wealthy people’s debates. Given Musk’s track record, it might be prudent to explore the chance that the texts aren’t authentic. You never know what might happen.
