For many people in the United States, getting a new stimulus check this year is pure chance. Citizens receive free money at the state and local levels, depending on where they live.
Of course, this is a stark contrast to what we’ve seen in the last two years of the pandemic. Remember when the federal government distributed stimulus checks worth billions of dollars to tens of millions of Americans around the country? To get part of that free money these days, you have to live in Maine, where Democratic Gov. Janet Mills just signed a $1.2 billion supplemental budget that will support a wave of $850 stimulus cheques, among other things.
Maine citizens can get money for free.
The 2022-2023 budget has just been signed into law! What does this mean for you?
🎓 Up to two years of free community college for pandemic impacted students
🛣 Funds to fix roads and bridges
🚑 Support for hospitals and nursing homes
💵 $850 back in Maine people’s pockets— Janet Mills (@JanetMillsforME) April 20, 2022
The Mills administration set up a website, Maine.gov/reliefchecks, on Friday, April 22, where residents can gather information about the payments (which will go out in June).
Quick facts:
- The $850 is free money for the 858,000 people in Maine.
- To be eligible as a full-time Maine resident, you must file a 2021 Maine individual income tax return by October 31, 2022.
- Those who qualify must have a federal adjusted gross income of less than $100,000 if single or married and filing separately, $150,000 if filing as head of household, or $200,000 if filing jointly.
“People in Maine are coping with increasing costs due to pandemic-driven inflation, ranging from higher energy bills to increased pricing of common commodities,” according to the particular website. “While the Governor has little control on COVID-19’s impact on global markets, she can ensure that Maine residents have the tools they need to deal with these higher expenses.”
“To aid, Governor Mills proposed returning more than half of the state’s budget excess to Maine taxpayers in $850 direct checks.”
Update on the Stimulus Check
As previously said, other states and municipalities attempt their own versions of the same thing. In some cities, such as Los Angeles, free money is given out as part of a basic income experiment. Participants in the LA program will get $1,000 per month for three years. Participants are free to use the money as they like.
In the meantime, many Americans should have received another stimulus bonus in the last few days.
Just a few days ago, the federal tax filing deadline passed. You might have claimed an equivalent amount as a tax credit this year, cutting your entire tax liability. How did you feel if you were one of the millions of Americans who received a child tax credit check last year?

Unfortunately, the federal government will not be providing any additional stimulus for the time being. That’s why states like Maine and others have been exploring ways to give away free money to their own citizens when it makes sense.
