By winning 3-0 against Angers on Wednesday, Paris Saint-Germain all but won a record-tying 10th French league title with five rounds to spare.
PSG leads second-place Marseille by 15 points and has a considerably better goal difference, but it still needs a point against Lens at home on Saturday to seal the title.
PSG is on course to equal Saint-Etienne, who won its 10th title in 1981 and is currently fighting for relegation. When Qatari owners QSI bought PSG in 2011, it only had two titles against Marseille’s nine.
After exchanging passes with right back Achraf Hakimi, Kylian Mbappe scored from the edge of the penalty area in the 28th minute to put PSG ahead.
Sergio Ramos, a former Real Madrid defender, headed in Angel Di Maria’s cross after a short corner shortly before halftime, and captain Marquinhos headed in another beautiful Di Maria assist in the 77th minute.
PSG appeared to be on the verge of celebrating the title after Nantes took the lead twice in Marseille. Marseille rallied, with Dimitri Payet scoring two penalties and midfielder Amine Harit scoring against his former club in the 75th minute to secure a 3-2 victory.
Marseille has a six-point lead over Rennes and Strasbourg in the race for second place in the automatic Champions League qualifying berth. Strasbourg defeated Rennes 2-1 at home in Alsace.
Mbappe leads the league with 22 goals, two more than Rennes’ Martin Terrier, who equalised for Rennes before Strasbourg’s towering striker Ludovic Ajorque scored the game-winning goal as coach Julien Stephan overcame the club where he made his reputation.
Rennes is still in third place in the Champions League playoffs, ahead of fourth-placed Strasbourg and fifth-placed Monaco, which beat Nice 1-0 at home to overtake its local rival.
Marseille fell behind in the first half at Stade Velodrome when Brazilian player Andrei Girotto was set up by midfielder Wylan Cyprien.
Payet equalised in the 39th minute, but Nantes’ Marcus Coco restored the advantage two minutes later.
