On Tuesday, lawmakers will examine a program that would provide $1,400 stimulus payments to select citizens.
The plan is aimed at residents of Washington, Iowa, who did not receive federal COVID stimulus cheques but endured different challenges due to the pandemic.
According to KCII Radio, citizens will petition on Tuesday to use cash from the American Rescue Plan Act for the stimulus program.
Escucha Mi Voz Washington petitioned the Washington City Council in January, demanding that a portion of the almost $1.08 million given to the city go to locals. As part of the plan, residents who were not qualified for federal stimulus cash will receive $1,400 cheques.
According to the report, the organization anticipates that over 140 residents will be eligible for the checks, totaling over $200,000 in needed finances.
The committee met with several local officials to discuss the situation. “With only one tweak, the Johnson County program could be replicated in Washington,” said David Goodner of the Catholic Worker House in Iowa City.
“People with many negative economic impacts should be prioritized,” says the author.
He explained that unemployed persons and those who did not receive a stimulus payment are eligible. One of the challenges, he explained, is that there are so many people who qualify, which could result in budget shortages.
“If we prioritize so that multiple impacts are addressed first,” Goodner explained, “then someone laid off or lost income and did not receive a stimulus check would have two or more negative impacts and would be at the front of the queue.”
The city still has about $300,000 in ARPA monies, according to KCII.
