In three years, a lot can happen. No one could have predicted that Jalen Hurts would one day be the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback in April of 2019.
There was no such thing as the United States Football League. Carson Wentz was firmly established as the franchise quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
If my memory serves me correctly, Nick Foles had just signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 13th, 2019. Many members of the Philadelphia Eagles locker room had built a shrine to him in what was once his locker, a shrine that they would never have built for Carson, we knew it was Wentz’s offence.
During April’s selection meeting, Philly’s brass picked a quarterback with the 167th overall pick for insurance purposes. Clayton Thorson was his name.
They waived him at the August final roster cuts, instead opting for a journeyman, Josh McCown, and Nate Sudfeld as Carson’s backups.
Clayton played for two different NFL teams during his career. The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants were both Eagles rivals, but his first start wouldn’t come until April 17th, 2022, during the first weekend of USFL activity.
That’s a lengthy way of saying what I’m about to say. Patience is a valuable asset. Clayton Thorson has a lot of it.
Clayton Thorson, a former Eagles quarterback, finally gets his first professional win. See? Spring football is a viable option.
It’s going to be a lot of fun. Thorson, the fifth-overall pick in the USFL Draft, and his new team, the Houston Gamblers, faced Shea Patterson and the Michigan Panthers after a tense and thrilling debut game between the New Jersey Generals and Birmingham Stallions that went down to the wire.
Thorson watched his defence make one final stand to seal a 17-12 victory after a weather delay and four quarters of play.
He finished with nine completions on 17 attempts, a 52.9 percent completion percentage, 73 yards passing, a touchdown, an interception, and a QBR of 96.7.
