The St. Louis Cardinals’ Albert Pujols is unquestionably a future Hall of Fame outfielder. However, a play from Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers will most likely go overlooked on the route to Cooperstown.
On Thursday, Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals made a move that left baseball fans scratching their heads.
Albert Pujols was back in the lineup for the St. Louis Cardinals when they faced their NL Central Division rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers, on the road for the Brewers’ home opener. Second baseman Kolten Wong made a throwing mistake that allowed Pujols to advance to second on a one-out single in the second inning.
To determine if the Cardinals could score with Albert Pujols at the plate, Paul DeJong went up to the plate. As a result of his decision, everyone (save Milwaukee pitcher Brandon Woodruff) was taken aback.
It was a risky move by Pujols, who isn’t known for his lightning-quick reflexes (his career-high of 16 stolen bases, set in 2005 and 2009, is a long time ago).
The attempt was a flop, as you can imagine. The St. Louis inning immediately went bad when Pujols was thrown out at the third base. DeJong walked and the inning was over.

The fact is, Pujols has made only a few blunders on the field since returning to the Cardinals and declaring his retirement. With a 3-for-9 record at the plate, Pujols had a solo home run in front of the Cardinals’ faithful that was part of a pair of consecutive home runs (after Nolan Arenado’s shot to left field) against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.
Pujols has had a remarkable career, but might this be his final stolen base attempt? You shouldn’t be surprised if he tries to add to his 116 career stolen bases before the season concludes.
