The fate of Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield remains unknown, despite the fact that he is clearly no longer in the Browns’ plans. While this has come as a surprise to some, it has not come as a surprise to Colin Cowherd.
Cowherd addressed a report that league executives are “shocked” Mayfield hasn’t found a new team on Wednesday’s episode of The Herd. Cowherd appeared to recognize the issue right away: Mayfield’s personality.
The Fox Sports analyst attributed Mayfield’s lack of interest to his priorities being in his own brand. He cited “commercials, big personalities, and magazine covers” as reasons why teams are skeptical of him.
According to Cowherd, teams are hesitant to bring Mayfield into the fold despite his talent because they don’t believe they can persuade him to buy into their culture. Mayfield’s recent injuries did not help his cause. As a result, teams would rather go with a lower-tier quarterback who will buy-in, even if he is a top 15-25 quarterback.
Since being drafted first overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, Baker Mayfield has been the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback for the last four years. He got the Browns over the hump and into the playoffs for the first time since 2002 in 2020.
With a playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, he quickly added to the Browns’ legacy.
Mayfield, on the other hand, regressed in 2021 and was injured for the first time in his career. They jumped at the chance to improve their quarterback situation by trading for Deshaun Watson.
Mayfield is now essentially a man on a team that no longer wants him. Unfortunately, it appears that very few other teams want him as well.
