Announcing his divorce from his wife after 22 years of marriage, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Albert Pujols said on Monday that he has filed for divorce.
Deidre Pujols revealed last month that she would be undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumor that had been discovered in October, prompting Pujols to make his revelation.
While his wife was preparing for the treatment, Pujols arrived at the Cardinals’ camp. The procedure, which was declared a success, took place while Pujols was there.
“I understand that this is an inconvenient moment, especially with Opening Day approaching and other family events that have just occurred,” Pujols said in a statement released this morning. ‘These circumstances are never simple to deal with, and they are not something that happened overnight.’ The fact that this has happened is something that I never intended to see happen as a committed Christian”

Albert and Deidre Pujols exchanged wedding vows on New Year’s Day in the year 2000. The couple is the parents of five children, one of which is Deidre’s daughter from a prior relationship.

Pujols has signed a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, the team with whom he began his Major League Baseball career in 2001. He previously spent nine seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and finished last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
