The Los Angeles Lakers have had a disastrous season, and Shaquille O’Neal, a franchise legend, believes major changes are needed.
O’Neal recommended gutting the roster during an appearance on CBS Sports HQ, despite the team’s 31-47 record with four games remaining.
“You have to get rid of contracts that are about to expire.” You need to get rid of any ventures that haven’t worked out. Around LeBron, you have to attempt to get younger and more athletic,” O’Neal remarked.
Only two players, in O’Neal’s opinion, should be safe: LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
“Keep LeBron and AD and make moves for everybody else.”

The Lakers finished sixth in the Western Conference last season after winning the NBA title in 2019-20. Despite this, Los Angeles was expected to challenge for a championship in 2021-22 following several offseason acquisitions, including a trade for Russell Westbrook.
Instead, nearly nothing has gone right for the squad, with the team’s seasoned (some might argue old) acquisitions essentially underwhelming and James and Davis both missing time due to injuries.
